Glacier National Park is what happens when Montana decides to show off. Turquoise alpine lakes, mountain walls with waterfalls running down them like someone left the faucet on, meadows full of beargrass, and mountain goats who think they are wedding guests. If a Glacier National Park elopement is the dream, this is your honest guide to making it real.

The Legal Part, Montana Style

Montana keeps it simple. You pick up your marriage license from any county clerk, there is no waiting period, and you can use it anywhere in the state. You need an officiant and two witnesses. I am ordained, so I can lead your ceremony and photograph it, and between the two of us we will charm a pair of hikers into witnessing. It works every time, and it makes the best story.

The Permit (Do Not Skip This Part)

Glacier requires a special use permit for wedding ceremonies, they limit which locations host them and how many people can come, and the popular spots fill up. This is the single most time-sensitive piece of planning a Glacier National Park elopement, so it is the first thing I handle when you book. Current rules live on the official Glacier National Park site, and chasing them is my job, not yours.

Where to Say Your Vows

Lake McDonald: the famous rainbow pebbles under clear water, huge mountain views, and easy access. A classic for a reason.

Two Medicine: quieter, wilder, and criminally underrated. If you want fewer people and bigger feelings, start here.

Many Glacier: the dramatic side. Grinnell views, wildlife everywhere, and the kind of scenery that makes your vows feel tiny and huge at the same time.

Along Going-to-the-Sun Road: pullouts and overlooks with thousand-foot views, plus alpine meadows where the beargrass blooms in July. My favorite first-dance spot in the entire park is a meadow up there with a waterfall pouring down the wall behind you.

When to Go

Late June through September is the window, because Going-to-the-Sun Road does not fully open until the snow lets go of it. July brings wildflowers and beargrass, August brings warm golden evenings, and September brings quiet trails and the first gold in the trees. For privacy in a busy park, we go at sunrise. You get empty overlooks, pink light on the peaks, and the whole day still ahead of you.

Ways to Make It a Whole Experience

Sunrise ceremony, then breakfast with a view: vows at first light, thermos coffee and huckleberry pastries on a lakeshore while the park wakes up.

An adventure day built in: hike to a glacier lake in your hiking boots with your dress in the pack, change at the top, and say your vows where the trail ends.

Lake McDonald stones: golden hour at the water with those famous colored pebbles underfoot. Bring the champagne.

Stargazing finale: Glacier is an International Dark Sky Park. We end late, heads back, Milky Way overhead. Your wedding day ends under a few billion stars.

Day-after session: back in the dress on a misty morning trail, zero schedule, all the fun. Some of my favorite frames ever come from day two.

What It Really Costs

The park entrance fee, a special use permit, a Montana marriage license, and your travel. That is the bones of it. Your real investments are your photographer and the experience you build, and it all still lands miles under the average American wedding. The mountains do the decorating for free.

What about bears? We hike smart, carry spray, and make noise. The wildlife is part of why this place feels alive, and respecting it is part of the deal. I am Leave No Trace certified, so your ceremony leaves the park exactly as gorgeous as we found it.
