How to Elope in Iceland

There’s a reason I keep finding my way back to Iceland. Black sand beaches, glaciers that glow blue, waterfalls you can stand behind, and that feeling of being the only two people on earth — it’s everything an elopement is supposed to be. After photographing elopements for 20 years, Iceland is still the place I’d tell almost any couple to run away to. Here’s everything you actually need to know to make it happen.

Why Iceland is one of the easiest places in the world to elope

Most destination weddings come with a mountain of foreign paperwork. Iceland doesn’t. It’s genuinely one of the simplest countries in the world for foreigners to legally marry — same-sex and opposite-sex couples welcome, and your marriage is recognized worldwide. There’s no residency requirement; you just need to be legally in the country on your wedding day.

How to legally get married in Iceland

You have two clean options.

Option 1 — Marry legally in Iceland. You’ll submit a few documents ahead of time: both birth certificates, a certificate of marital status issued within four weeks of your date, and a marriage notification confirming there’s no legal impediment. Everything needs to reach the District Commissioner about two weeks before your wedding day, and you’ll need an officiant and two witnesses. The civil marriage fee is tiny — roughly 11,000 ISK (about $80) — and your international marriage certificate arrives a couple of weeks later.

Option 2 — Keep it stress-free (my favorite). Do the legal paperwork quietly at home, then have your real ceremony in Iceland with zero bureaucracy. Because I’m ordained, I can perform your ceremony and photograph it — so it’s just the two of you, your vows, and the landscape, with no extra officiant to hire or coordinate. This is the route most of my couples choose.

Plan Your Iceland Elopement

The best time to elope in Iceland

There’s no single best month — it depends on what you want to see:

  • May–June: the sweet spot — long days, softer crowds, better prices, everything green and waking up.
  • July–August: the only window the highlands fully open. Best for hiking to remote spots.
  • September: my favorite — fall colors, far fewer tourists, and the Northern Lights start to appear.
  • Winter (February–March): the most dramatic — aurora overhead and blue ice caves — though access is limited and the weather is wild.

The best places to elope in Iceland

A few of my favorites:

  • Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach — floating icebergs and chunks of glacier scattered across black sand.
  • Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach — basalt columns and roaring Atlantic waves near the village of Vík.
  • Skógafoss & Seljalandsfoss — towering waterfalls and rainbows; you can actually walk behind Seljalandsfoss.
  • Snæfellsnes Peninsula & the highlands — mountains, moss, and a little of everything Iceland.

What it costs to elope in Iceland

Plan for three buckets: travel (flights, a rental 4×4, and lodging), the legal piece (around $80 if you marry in-country), and your photographer and experience. Iceland rewards couples who give it a few days — the best light and most remote spots are worth building a small trip around rather than rushing in and out. Reach out and I’ll help you map a plan that fits your budget.

What to wear & planning tips

Layers, always — Iceland can hand you sun, wind, and rain in one afternoon. Bring a dress you can move in, real shoes for the walk to your location, and a statement coat for the cold shots (they’re always the most dramatic). I help every couple plan the timeline around the light and the weather, so you’re never guessing.
