There is a moment that happens to every couple I bring into the redwoods. They stop talking, tilt their heads all the way back, and go quiet. You are standing under living things that were already ancient when Rome fell. If you want a wedding that feels sacred without a single pew, this is your forest. Consider this your redwoods elopement starter plan.

Where the Giants Live

Redwood National and State Parks (far northern California): the heavyweights. Jedediah Smith, Prairie Creek, and Del Norte hold some of the tallest trees on the planet, with fog that drifts through like it was hired for the photos.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park and the Avenue of the Giants: a 31 mile drive through pure cathedral. Quieter than the national park crowds, with groves that swallow sound.

A note on Muir Woods: couples ask constantly, and as of this writing, Muir Woods does not issue wedding permits. Do not let an Instagram post talk you into a ceremony that gets shut down by a ranger. We go north, where it is welcome and even more beautiful.

The Permit Talk (Simple, Just Do Not Skip It)

Every ceremony in the redwoods needs a permit, even two people whispering vows. The good news: they are cheap and very gettable.

Permit details live on the official Redwood National and State Parks wedding page.

Redwood National Park: pre-approved ceremony locations run a $100 application fee; other locations run $200.

Jedediah Smith, Del Norte, and Prairie Creek state parks: $100 non-refundable application, ceremony window of 1 to 3 hours.

Humboldt Redwoods: $150 non-refundable application through California State Parks.

Apply up to 6 months out and no later than 4 weeks before your date. And know the no-go list: permits are not issued for Fern Canyon, Stout Grove, or Lady Bird Johnson Grove. Fees and rules shift, so we confirm current numbers when we pick your grove. This is the part I walk through with every couple, so you are never guessing.

When to Go

Summer mornings: coastal fog rolls through the groves and turns sunbeams into something biblical. This is the classic redwoods photo, and it burns off by midday, so we start early.

Fall and winter: empty trails, deep greens, and rain that makes the forest smell incredible. Bring boots, get moody photos nobody else has.

Anytime: the groves hold their temperature and their magic year round. There is no bad season under the giants, just different moods.

A Sample Redwoods Elopement Day

First light in the grove while the fog is still low. Your ceremony under a tree that predates the calendar, permit folded in my bag. A quiet champagne toast on a fallen giant. Midday break, then golden hour where the light cuts sideways through the canopy in actual visible rays. If we are near the coast, we end on a wild northern California beach as the sun drops into the Pacific. Forest and ocean in one wedding day.

Redwoods Elopement Questions I Get a Lot

Will we have privacy?

More than you would think. The parks are enormous and most visitors stick to a few famous pullouts. Early starts and the right grove mean it will feel like the forest belongs to you.

Who handles the permit?

We do it together. I know the timelines and the locations that photograph best, you sign and pay the fee, and we keep the confirmation with us on the day.

What should we wear?

Layers, and shoes you can walk soft forest floor in. Flowing fabric moves beautifully in the groves. Bring the statement coat if we are doing the coast too.
